Island Delight Getting Involved with the Business in the Community Initiative (BITC)

Island Delight is a Jamaican-founded company with a goal to enrich the lives of consumers through the taste of good food. We take pride in showcasing the taste of Jamaica through our company’s tasty Jamaican patties. Also, as a company we are always looking for new ways to improve our business further. As well as meet other like-minded entrepreneurs.

We recognise the urgency and importance of businesses taking responsibility and accountability for their environmental and community impact. With this in mind, we are proud to be working with BITC. An organisation that supports businesses in taking a modern-day approach to business.

BITC

With His Majesty King Charles III as its Royal Founding Patron, the Business in the Community (BITC) was formed in 1982. The membership organisation is dedicated to responsible business. Working with hundreds of members to help advocate and encourage their responsible business practices. The BITC organisation have a focus on greater social and environmental impact within our communities. They also dedicate themselves to creating a fair and sustainable world to live and work in.

Here at Island Delight, we are passionate about building prosperous communities through a shared love of food and culture as well as working towards a greener future. Having been named the winner of the Santander Responsible Small Company Award at the BITC Awards for Excellence back in 2012, it’s safe to say that despite the businesses’ growth over the years, our Caribbean traditional philosophy still shines through.

Sustainable business practices

Now, in 2022, Island Delight is incredibly excited to be working with BITC again as part of the West Midlands Board. Meeting quarterly, we all discuss what the SMEs and large businesses need to thrive responsibly. Primarily focusing on sustainability, employment and the economy, the BITC is a great way to network with other businesses. Our next step with the organisation is to work together to create a sustainability strategy and plan. With the goal of going net zero over the coming years, we’ll be exploring new ways to reduce our energy consumption. As well as offset our carbon footprint.

True Caribbean Culture

A core aspect of Caribbean culture is to always make sure that everyone is involved. Our communities and workforces are a similar dynamic to that of an extended family. With this in mind, we try to make sure we help each other in the best way we can. This ethos can be applied to a variety of situations. However, we commonly practice it when it comes to sourcing business needs – from ingredients to employees.

Ingredients

At Island Delight, we try to source our ingredients from other local independent businesses. This is so that we can invest money back into our local economy and support fellow local businesses. However, due to some of the uniqueness of our ingredients and authenticity of our original recipes, using locally sourced ingredients can be difficult. Supporting our community is at the heart of what we do and we therefore strive to do so whenever possible.

Employees

We commit ourselves to ensure our workplace remains fair and enjoyable for our highly valued team. From family-friendly policies to facilitate local employment for those with school-aged children, through to staff development programmes, our priority has always been retention over recruitment. With this in mind, we work hard to sustain our company growth through nurturing a team of happy and fulfilled employees.
